The Burgtheater, which combines tradition, diversity and contemporary theater, is Austria's most important national theater and one of the oldest theaters in Europe. Opened in 1888, the Burgtheater seats up to 1,140 theater-goers per evening. Today, the former "k.k. Hoftheater nächst der Burg" with its three associated venues Akademietheater, Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz and Vestibül as well as a permanent ensemble is one of the largest spoken theaters in Europe.
