As one of the world's most important opera houses, the Vienna State Opera looks back on a past rich in tradition and can be just as proud of its versatile present.
Every season, more than 60 different opera and ballet works are on the program in around 350 performances. Every evening, international stars can be seen on stage and on the conductor's podium alongside the permanent members of the ensemble - accompanied in the pit by a unique orchestra: the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, whose musicians form the orchestra of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Today, the Vienna State Opera is regarded as one of the most important opera houses in the world, and above all as the house with the largest repertoire.
After numerous efforts to provide the young audience with adequate space, a suitable venue was found in the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz. The result was the NEST - Neue Staatsoper, an opera house with 252 seats, an orchestra pit and a laced floor, which opened on December 7, 2024. The new venue was made possible by a patronage grant from the Haselsteiner Family Private Foundation, generous sponsorship from STRABAG SE and a one-off grant from the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport. The repertoire of the new venue includes numerous world premieres and a varied program for young audiences.
The new venue is also the place where the young artistic collectives of the Haus am Ring - the opera school, the opera studio, the ballet academy and the youth company - can perform.
