Energy and environmental management
Awareness of ecological sustainability based on scientific findings is becoming increasingly important in theater companies. Examples of ecological sustainability already in practice at the Austrian Federal Theatres include energy and environmental management across all companies with innovative technologies such as LED lighting and solar energy, the use of reusable and recycled materials for stage and costume designs and participation in the “Klimafitte Kulturbetriebe” program, which promotes ecological projects for the sustainable reduction of CO2 emissions in all buildings belonging to an arts and culture company in Austria.
From the resource-conserving use of materials to energy-efficient lighting technology and guest performance trips by train - each of these measures on and behind the stage contributes to protecting our environment and our climate. The commitment to sustainability does not just exist on paper or in lip service now and in the future, but is lived and developed in all our companies and theaters in our daily activities.
Development of energy consumption at the Austrian Federal Theatres
The total annual energy consumption of the Austrian Federal Theatres has been reduced by 37% thanks to the energy-saving efforts of the last 10 years. In 2024 alone, the total energy requirement was reduced by a further 5% compared to the previous year. The success of the Austrian Federal Theatres' energy management can be seen in the numerous initiatives and, not least, in the results of the energy consumption evaluations. In 2024, the Austrian Federal Theatres' heating requirements were reduced by 8%, electricity requirements by 1.5% and mobility requirements by 14%.
