Österreichisches Umweltzeichen for all theaters

With the award of the Austrian Ecolabel, the Vienna State Opera, the Volksoper Vienna and the Burgtheater are sending a strong signal for the combination of art and sustainability. The award of the Austrian Ecolabel to all three theaters confirms the successful sustainability, energy and environmental management of the Austrian Federal Theaters, which has been implemented through the following measures:

• Conservation of resources

  The use of modern LED technology in stage and building lighting has led to a reduction in energy consumption. The optimization of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems also minimized energy consumption.

• Waste management

  A comprehensive recycling and waste separation system was introduced. The use of reusable alternatives resulted in a reduction in disposable plastic.

• Mobility

  Environmentally friendly travel options for visitors and employees were promoted, for example through cooperation with public transport companies.

• Raising awareness

  Workshops and training courses on sustainable behaviour in the workplace were organized for employees and the public was made aware of this through information campaigns and sustainable offers in the event programme.

  The award of the Austrian Ecolabel not only further improves the Austrian Federal Theatres' sustainability record, but also sends a strong signal to the public. The initiative shows that the Austrian Federal Theatres are taking on a pioneering role in climate protection in the cultural sector.

  The Austrian Federal Theatres want to build on this success and implement further steps to promote sustainability in the future, including the constant increase in efficiency in building technology and the steady expansion of photovoltaic capacities. The aim is to consolidate the position of the Austrian Federal Theatres as a cultural and ecological role model.
